ATM Safety and Security

Tips for ATM Safety

With the banking convenience available from Automated Teller Machines (ATMs) comes an increased need for security and personal caution. ATMs can be located just about anywhere, and they are available 24 hours, 7 days a week. One of today’s biggest concerns is Identity Theft, in which a criminal steals your account information and then runs up charges and other bills in your name. These criminals often begin with stolen ATM information. Whether to protect your identity or to secure your personal safety, it makes good sense to exercise caution when using the ATM.

The tips in this flyer are meant to make you aware that, although rare, ATM crime can happen. Preventing such a crime must be a cooperative effort between you and your bank.

WHAT YOU CAN DO

1. Protect your card as if it were cash.

2. Safeguard your Personal Identification Number (PIN). ATM fraud is most often committed by individuals who know the ATM cardholder. Don’t write your PIN on your card. Memorize the number if you can. Avoid using numbers that are easily identified (birth date, phone number, etc.) Don’t give the number to anyone.

3. Report lost or stolen cards immediately.

4. Never leave your receipt behind—even with an incomplete transaction. Discarded ATM receipts are a primary means of identity theft and account fraud. Take your receipt home with you and either file it or shred it before throwing it away. Even at home, receipts can be a source for identity thieves—they rummage through the trash to find account numbers and other personal information.

5. Minimize your time at the machine. Have your ATM card ready and in your hand when you approach the machine. Know your PIN number and be ready to punch it in. Review your plans for transactions before going to the machine so you know what to do as soon as you get there.

6. Give people ahead of you the space to conduct their transactions. When you use the ATM, make sure no one watches you key in your PIN number. You can use your body to shield the ATM keypad.

7. Count your money later, not at the ATM. Put it away first, then review your transaction at your convenience...in your car or at home.

8, If you leave your car to use the ATM, be sure to lock it up.

9. When using the ATM at night, make sure there is ample lighting and the ATM is clearly visible from the street. Tell the bank about overgrown bushes, poor lighting or anything else you feel compromises personal safety and security at the ATM.

WHAT WE ARE DOING

1. Putting ATMs in areas that are clearly visible from the street and to foot traffic.

2. Maintaining landscaping that discourages thieves from hiding near the machine.

3. Maintaining lighting that is bright enough for night use.

4. When possible, installing cameras, rear view mirrors, panic buttons, and special signs.

5. Working with manufacturers to improve security technology.

An ATM, like one of our branches, should be convenient, enjoyable, safe and secure. Let us know if you have suggestions to improve your ATM experience, or if you want to learn more about ATM safety.  You can reach a Green Team member at 1-888-918-4473.
